Self-published authors are always fighting against the sea of traditional (and self-published) published books. We have very limited budgets, but our love for storytelling keeps pushing us to get our books into your hands. The best gift I get is to see you reading my book. But I can't express what it means to receive a review from you (not only because it warms my heart but also because it helps my business).
That said, some friends - or even customers - often ask me, 'What can I do to help you?' Well, recently, AuthorPreneur Central invited me for an interview, and I was BLOWN AWAY by the number of people liking, commenting, and sharing the interview (you can find it here). I wanted to say thank you! Every little thing you do helps. I'm not joking. If you tell a friend about one of my books, share a picture on your social media, leave a review, like/comment/share a post I did, etc.
Self-published authors pour their heart and soul into their work, often juggling multiple roles from writing to marketing. Supporting us can make a huge difference in our journey. So, for you who have an author friend, here is how you can help:
1. Buy Our Books
It's obvious, but purchasing our books is the most direct way to support an author. Whether it’s an eBook, paperback, or hardcover, every sale counts. Also, consider buying extra copies as gifts for friends and family. An additional tip: buying it around launch week will even boost our book's chance of success.
2. Leave Reviews
Reviews are crucial for self-published authors. They help increase visibility and credibility, plus there are rumors they boost the book's algorithm on the vendor's website (a fancy way to say the website shows books with more reviews up in the least than the ones with no or little reviews). Leave honest reviews on platforms like Amazon, Goodreads, and other online bookstores (if you can, do it on them all! In some places, you can even leave reviews without purchasing the book!). Even a few sentences can make a significant impact. You can also leave a verified purchase review by downloading ebooks if the author has a free ebook promo day!
3. Spread the Word
Word of mouth is powerful and can make a massive difference to us. Share your favorite books on social media, in book clubs, and with friends. Use hashtags and tag us to increase our reach. You have no idea how incredibly heartwarming and helpful it is when someone shares a picture of their kid reading one of my books!
4. Follow and Engage on Social Media
Follow us on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook. Engage with their posts by liking, commenting, and sharing. This helps boost our visibility and shows your support.
5. Join Our Mailing List
Many authors have newsletters sharing updates, exclusive content, and special offers. Joining their mailing list is a great way to stay connected and show your support.
6. Attend Book Signings and Events
Try to attend if we host book signings, readings, or virtual events. Your presence and participation can be incredibly encouraging and encourage other people to join.
7. Support Our Patreon or Crowdfunding Campaigns
Some authors fund their projects using platforms like Patreon or Kickstarter (I haven't YET). Supporting us financially through these channels can provide us with the resources we need to continue creating.
8. Recommend Our Books to Libraries and Bookstores
Suggest your local library or bookstore carry our books (it won't cost you a dime). This can help increase our exposure and sales.
9. Engage with Our Content
If we have a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel, engage with our content. Please leave comments, share our posts, and participate in discussions.
10. Send a Personal Note
A simple message of appreciation can go a long way. Let us know how much you enjoyed our work and how it impacted you. Personal connections can be incredibly motivating.
Supporting a self-published author like me doesn’t always require a financial investment. Your time, effort, and enthusiasm can significantly impact our success.
So, pick a few of these tips and start supporting your favorite author today! 📚✨
