As we mentioned in our previous article, "Benefits of Teaching a Second Language, 20 Fun Children's Books in Spanish & Free Read-Aloud Video," a second language can make a remarkable difference in children's lives! I'm raising a multilingual child myself, and I want all kids to thrive as they learn Spanish. In this post, I'm sharing with you:

  • Tips for helping your child learn Spanish

  • Cool Shows, Toys, and Gadgets that support their learning journey

  • FREE children's books in Spanish (limited time, from April 28-29!)

How can I help my child learn Spanish?

First of all, I'm so immensely glad you are here. Teaching a second language to your child is a fantastic decision, and it will open so many doors in their future! Learning a new language may come naturally for a few, but it's challenging for most - mainly if you, as a parent, don't speak Spanish yourself. But don't fret! You can still support your child in this journey:

  • Don't leave it for tomorrow: the earlier a new language is introduced, the higher the chances it will stick.

  • Make Spanish a part of your routine! In my opinion, immersion is the most effective way to teach children any language. Check out some ideas below:

    • Read books in Spanish - if you aren't good at Spanish, this is the perfect opportunity to show your child that there is no "perfection" in learning. It's a safe space to try, make mistakes, and learn. If you are a pro at Spanish, this will definitely be a good example and train their little ears (:

    • Make a routine that includes Spanish. For example, if you have screen time, maybe start it with a TV show or movie in Spanish or a game that will help them work on their Spanish.

    • Try to have an allotted time for Spanish in the house (maybe a specific day it's "Spanish day," or lunchtime is Spanish only at the table, etc.

    • Label it all! It may sound funny, but labeling things around the house will help with vocabulary - and keep igniting the part of the brain that turns the Spanish on!

    • Take days throughout the year to explore Spanish and or Mexican culture together:

      • Attempt to bake a traditional dish together (this can also work on their math concepts - you are welcome!)

      • Read about an icon from those countries

      • Chat about a big event that is happening/happened in these countries

      • If you are related to people from those countries, work on a family tree and show how real Spanish speakers are!

      • If you can afford it, plan a trip to a Spanish-speaking country (sure, it's not for everyone, but it would be neat!)

  • Having friends, caregivers, duo language school, or family members to practice with will set an example and show kids they have the POWER to speak to new people.

  • Turn the radio on, your Echo Dot, or whatever you use! Music is life, kids learn, express, and play through music! Use this to your advantage and get some Spanish beats!

  • For older children: consider doing an online class together or hire a tutor - and watch the classes together so you can practice later!
